Chinese Han Jian Sword with 1045 Carbon Steel Blade

The jian, a double-edged straight sword used in China for the past 2,500 years, has a rich history. Mention of the jian dates back to the 7th century BCE during the Spring and Autumn period, with one of the earliest known examples being the Sword of Goujian. Traditional one-handed versions of the jian typically have blades ranging from 45 to 80 centimeters in length, with an average weight of 700 to 900 grams. There are also larger two-handed versions used for martial arts training.

Professional practitioners of the jian are known as jianke, or "sword guests," a term originating from the Han dynasty. In Chinese folklore, the jian is revered as "The Gentleman of Weapons" and is considered one of the four major weapons alongside the Gun, Qiang, and Dao.
